NW Colorado has a lot of options for adult late season elk hunts which allow a hunter to hunt cow elk after the regular rifle 1-4 seasons. Craig, Colorado and the adjacent Flat Tops area enjoys the largest herds of Elk in Colorado, and in the world. Thousands of acres of both private and public land in the Craig Colorado, Maybell, Meeker and Hayden areas lies in the direct path of the Elk herd migration. Elk hunting begins during the September bugle season and goes through to the late season hunts from November-January. Late Season Elk cow hunts are very popular in the Craig, Colorado area and are ideal for families or father/son teams.
Additionally, Colorado offers youths, 12-17, an opportunity to keep hunting if they don’t harvest an elk or pronghorn before their season ends. This option is available to youths with unfilled female or either-sex licenses. Youths with unfilled bull elk or buck pronghorn licenses are not eligible. The information below covers how each program works and lists eligible hunts.
Late Season Elk Hunts
Starting in 2013, youths with an unfilled cow or either-sex limited license can participate in the youth late season; however, youths are only eligible to hunt the late season in specific GMUs that are grouped with the original GMU for which the license was purchased.
