Cedar Mountain
Cedar Mountain is a prominent landmark close to Craig. Cedar Mountain is part of the Elkhead Mountains which are the erosional remnants of an solated tertiary volcanic field located in Moffat and Routt Counties in NW Colorado. The mountains are situated a few miles south of the Wyoming-Colorado state line with Cedar Mountain on the southern tip, located approximately 1 mile north of State Road 13 on the west side of the road.
The mountain consists of 880 acres of BLM public land, and has an elevation of 6,500 feet, providing panoramic views of the Yampa Valley. Cedar Mountain offers a wide variety of year-round recreational activities.
This horseshoe shaped juniper-rimmed mountain stands 1,000 feet above the Yampa Valley. Because of Cedar Mountain’s isolation from similar terrain, the horse shoe shaped rim provides a vantage point which offers a view of the surrounding high desert plains. It is a great spot for hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and mountain biking.
Geology
Cedar Mountain’s geology consists primarily of Browns Park Formation chalky-white colored sandstone. An ancient flow of Basalt provides a weather resistant cap which forms the mountain. There are several small faults visible from the mountain.
Vegetation and Wildlife
Vegetation includes Juniper, Sagebrush, and mountain brush. Animals include: Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks, Turkey Vultures, Mule Deer, Marmots, Red Foxes, Coyote, Rabbits and Ground Squirrels. During the migration, there is also the possibility of seeing elk. During nesting season, outcroppings along the mountain’s edge should be avoided to prevent disturbing fledglings.

About the Trail at Cedar Mountain
Start the trail 100 yards from the parking area on the right side of the road. Head straight up and follow the entire trail in a loop back to the parking area. Part of the trail will follow the 4 wheel drive road down from the radio towers. Look for the singletrack to head off to the right and continue the loop. Trail is excellent, but is rocky in spots. Deer are sure to be seen in this area.
