Bird Watching in Northwest Colorado

Colorado ranges from dramatic red-rock canyons and frothing rivers to grasslands, reservoirs and lakes via the Rocky Mountains and Flat Top Mountains of NW Colorado, a topography that draws in bird watchers after both bird variety and noteworthy landscapes. Through the mountains of the High Country in NW Colorado, the land is sparsely populated making it a haven for many kinds of wildlife; especially birds.  In many cases, the birding is also good around historic monuments and off mountain hiking trails making it simple to mix outdoor action adventure activities with ornithology.

Colorado is home to more than 400 bird species. All you need to be a birder in Colorado is a field guide and a pair of binoculars. For photographs and more info on local bird watching in Craig, Colorado, click here:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Moffat-County-Birding/714098968613208

For those looking for unique Colorado birds, below are a few of the most popular with experienced birdwatchers in the Craig, CO area:

  1. Calliope Hummingbird – While their more aggressive relatives duke it out for a spot at the feeder, these tiny and passive hummingbirds can be seen sneaking a sip of nectar in late summer and early fall. But keep your eyes peeled. These 0.1-ounce gems are very rare.
  2. Sandhill Crane – Tall, slender and steely eyed, sandhill cranes are one of the state’s most majestic birds.
  3. Bald Eagle – Our national bird is a rare resident of Colorado.
